Advantages

	Simple in principle.
	Easy to use.
	Can be portable.
	Fast positive and reliable method of testing suitable components.

Disadvantages

	Parts should be degreased and de-magnetised before and after inspection.
	Paint removal is required.
	Magnetic flux must be normal to the plane of the defect to show indications.
	Complex shaped components can be difficult and time consuming to examine thoroughly.
